The Axcend Focus LC® is a breakthrough, fully portable, high-performance liquid chromatography system that can be hand-carried anywhere and used on-the-spot: within a laboratory, inside a glove box, on a scientist’s desk, on a manufacturing line, and yes, even in the field.

The Axcend Focus LC® is a small footprint HPLC with a nano pumping system and on-column detector, so it requires very small quantities of sample and mobile phase solvents for analysis lending it to be GREEN by default. Green chemistry, also called sustainable chemistry, is an area of chemistry and chemical engineering focused on the design of products and processes that minimize or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. With flow rates of 0.5-1 mL/minute, a typical HPLC consumes copious amounts of organic solvents. The Axcend Focus LC® weighs less than 8 kg and consumes less than 1.5 mL’s of solvent in a 24-hour period! Key benefits include:

  • The HPLC is completely self-contained so there is no exposure to the user of the environment. There is no need for a fume hood.

The American Chemical Society Handbook for Undergraduate Professional Education in Chemistry documents guidelines and evaluation procedures for bachelor degree programs. Specifically, the handbook states that the laboratory experience must include hands-on involvement with modern instrumentation, including liquid chromatography devices. In fact, instruments from at least four of the following five categories must be on-site and used by undergraduates:

Miniaturization of an HPLC enables analytical determination at the point-of-need, whether within a conventional laboratory setting, within a processing facility, or classroom and Laboratory setting. Additionally, it addresses many of the challenges listed above by providing a fully self-contained compact and portable HPLC with capillary flow rates. This application note shows how low levels of benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes (BTEX) can be determined in water with the use of relatively large injection volumes. The standard injection valve typically delivers a 40 nL injection volume. Substituting this small internal sample loop valve with a larger external loop enables injections of a wide range of sample volumes from 200 nL and higher.
