The adoption of liquid chromatography (LC) for a variety of routine but challenging applications such as on-line analysis and reaction monitoring has been limited by instrument size and unacceptable consumption and disposal of organic solvents precluding co-location with associated sampling and sample preparation equipment. The use of compact instrumentation is obvious to improve integration between sampling and LC analysis in non-ideal situations as compared to conventional analytical LC on a laboratory bench. To solve these problems, a compact sample preparation module for compact capillary LC was developed to automate sampling, filtration, and analysis from a range of reaction vessels and other on-line sample sources. The associated nontrivial processes of sampling from moving streams, elimination of matrix interferents, concentration of target analytes, and on-line introduction of samples into compact LC at sub-microliter-to-microliter volumes and flow rates (i.e., microliters per minute) will be described and demonstrated for selected real-world monitoring applications. In addition, a new autosampler designed specifically for compactness, portability, and compatibility with compact LC will be described and demonstrated.

Small footprint LC addresses rapidly growing interest in (a) minimal laboratory bench space, (b) greatly reduced use of mobile phase, (c) green analytical LC, (d) ease of movement from one spot to another in the laboratory, and (d) ease of interfacing with a variety of detectors (e.g., LEDs of specific wavelengths, diode arrays, mass spectrometry, and radioactivity). While capillary LC instruments have been available for some time, small footprint capillary LC and complementary automated systems for sample preparation and detection have been limited. To address this concern, a compact sample preparation platform for compact capillary LC was developed to automate sampling, filtration, and extraction from a range of liquid sample sources. The associated nontrivial processes of sampling from moving streams, elimination of matrix interferents, concentration of target analytes, and on-line introduction of samples into compact LC at sub-microliter-to-microliter volumes and flow rates (i.e., microliters per minute) will be described and demonstrated for selected applications. In addition, a new autosampler designed specifically for compactness, portability, and compatibility with small footprint, compact LC will be described and demonstrated.
